Bamboo – Southsea

Author: Sir Robert Gobe-Shité

Bamboo is a new kid on the block. The premises have long been a Chinese restaurant (Bamboo House) but have now been brought right up to date with a stylish, modern refurbishment.

The menu is Pan-Aisian offering everything from Sushi to Thai Curry. There is a genuine attempt to provide real quality in the food and the drink and I have not been disappointed in my three visits so far. The service is relaxed and charming from the young hosts.

If I were to be critical, I could say that the sushi offering is a little lacking in adventure compared to a seasoned sushi house – the main offerings consisting of only tuna and salmon or prawn. The local fish market (well Southsea/portsmouth is on the sea and has a fishing port of sorts) does provide a reasonable selection of fresh fish and shellfish like bass, scallops and mackerel that are all suitable for sushi so I hope this element will develop further.

Whilst the area is not lacking in a variety of ethnic restaurants, this Pan-Asian or Fusion style is very welcome and will prove popular.
